Even though Birmingham has a legitimate scene, I can’t help but pretend I’m in the Lower East Side.

What do you expect from your typical Dominican grocery on the Lower East Side?Does the image of a neon-lit basement where all the chicos malos gather to play pool until the last star fades away pop up?

yes, yelp does review bodegas (or at least this particular one)

the best pancakes of my life, from clinton st baking co tonight: w/blackberries, pecan streusel, and maple butter. i am fat but i like it.
54/265

Arghhh.. I went here for brunch (after putting our name down, lazing around at home for 2 hours then coming back and still having to wait 45 minutes before being seated) and one of the members of our party made the unfortunate mistake of ordering the blueberry pancakes (an acquaintance had described the experience as “seeing God”).
They were NOT that great. I’ve had better pancakes at Barmarche in SoHo and Cafe Luluc in Boerum Hill, neither of which flouts being the “best” pancakes ever. Although Clinton Street did lose to Bobby Flay in a “Throwdown” they’re still sittin’ on their high horse of pancakes. We were disappointed - NO CRISPY EDGES IN SIGHT! The other brunch options, however (I got the Southern Breakfast, another got the Cajun Shrimp and Grits) were really, really delicious.
The pancakes above (pecan streusel!) do sound more exciting than regular ol’ blueberry, but still for being pancake gods Clinton Street didn’t live up to the hype. Definitely not worth the wait for brunch pancakes (but the other meals.. mmm, maybe worth a 30 minute wait). For dinner, maybe the experience is a bit more pleasant. This month is pancake month, and some things sound quite promising so might be worth checking out in the eveningtime.
Clinton Street Baking Co. is at 4 Clinton St. btw Houston and Stanton

Well, I went here and wasn’t blown away - but the brunches come with “two” bloody marys/mimosas which friendly servers often generously reinterpret
