Yet another report that Clayton Patterson’s photo exhibit at the Alife Gallery (157 Rivington btw Suffolk and Clinton) is a total MUST-SEE.
“The LES was […] filled with Crips and Bloods gangs, homeless men, hookers, bikers and punks. Patterson documented everything from police battles with anarchists to the famous riots near Tompkins Square Park in ‘88. He was himself arrested a dozen times.
Residents of the neighborhood used to ring his doorbell to be photographed in front of his graffiti-covered front door on Essex Street. They couldn’t afford to have their portraits taken so Patterson became the official photographer of the LES.”
Check it out, it’ll be up til Nov 8th!
